Blizzard's Halloween season is here with a new support hero built around lifesteal and bat drones, a new Escort map, and two of the biggest hero reworks the game has seen in a while.

Doctrine, the final Talon figure

The headline addition is Doctrine, a new support hero aligned with Talon. Blizzard describes the kit around lifesteal powers and bat drones, wrapped in a gothic vampire aesthetic that fits the season perfectly.

Support players have been asking for a darker, more aggressive healer fantasy, and Doctrine looks built for exactly that. Expect the usual two-week balance rollercoaster while the meta figures out where a lifesteal support slots in.

Halloween takes over

Season 5 leans all the way into spooky season: Graveyard Games, Halloween Battle Pass skins, Tech Witches cosmetics, and Team Drives headline the event content. Halloween has consistently been one of Overwatch's most popular seasonal beats, and this year's offering looks stacked.

New Escort map: Grímsvötn

A new Escort map, Grímsvötn, joins the rotation. New maps always shake up the first few weeks of a season as teams learn sightlines and chokepoints, so expect some chaos in ranked while everyone figures it out.

Sombra goes support, Roadhog gets reworked

The two biggest systemic changes: Sombra moves to the support role and Roadhog gets a full rework. A DPS-to-support conversion is rare air for Overwatch balance, and Roadhog has needed the attention for a long time. Both changes will define how this season actually plays far more than any single skin.

Also in the season

Rounding out the patch: a Shadow Monarch collaboration, Unvaulted Passes bringing back older content, and new Mythics — including Lucio's first Mythic Weapon. Lucio mains have waited long enough for that one.

The bottom line

Season 5 is one of the meatiest Overwatch seasons in recent memory: a new hero, a new map, two major reworks, and a full Halloween event. If you drifted away from the game, this is the season to check back in. If you never left, Doctrine is about to ruin your ranked games for two weeks — in the best way.
