Fortnite’s Halloween takeover is here, bringing Freddy Krueger, cursed powers, returning weapons, Horde Rush, and a month-long crossover lineup to Battle Royale and Reload.
Fortnitemares 2026 is not contained to one corner of the island. Epic’s October 1 update spreads its horror theme across Battle Royale, Horde Rush, and Reload, with map changes, a boss encounter, new combat tools, and character drops planned throughout the month.
Two destinations set the tone
The update points players toward Freaky Fields and the new Nightmare Neighborhood point of interest. The Neighborhood is where Freddy Krueger waits as a boss encounter, making the location both a sightseeing stop and an immediate high-risk objective.
Defeating Freddy rewards his signature item, Freddy’s Nightmare. The weapon lets its user teleport into range before slashing opponents, creating a close-quarters threat that can quickly collapse the space between two players.
New tools reward information and risk
The Bonerattler SMG joins the loot pool with the ability to reveal enemies. It arrives alongside returning Fortnitemares favorites including the Wood Stake Shotgun and Pumpkin Launcher, giving the seasonal weapon mix both new utility and familiar explosive pressure.
Cursed cartridge Overrides introduce another layer of decision-making. The available effects can make a player invisible while sprinting, boost damage at low health, or disguise an entire squad as Halloween props. Each power changes how a fight can begin—or how a team can escape it.
Animatronics can become your weapon
Five Nights at Freddy’s is woven into the update beyond cosmetics. Animatronic bosses appear on the map, and defeating one gives players the chance to possess it and turn that character against other players. It is one of the event’s biggest changes to the usual Battle Royale rhythm: a boss fight can become an advantage that follows the winner back into the match.
Horde Rush returns, Reload expands October 8
The wave-based Horde Rush limited-time mode is back for the event. Reload gets its own follow-up on October 8, when an updated Nitemare Island arrives alongside Stranger Things and Squid Grounds maps.
That staggered rollout gives Fortnitemares two beats: the opening Battle Royale takeover and a second drop for Reload players a week later.
A month of horror crossovers
Five Nights at Freddy’s outfits are first out of the gate, complete with visible battle damage. Epic says more outfits and accessories will follow throughout October from A Nightmare on Elm Street, Black Clover, Hollow Knight, 99 Nights in the Forest, Hazbin Hotel, The Purge, Obsession, Slender Man, Beetlejuice, Predator: Badlands, and Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights.
The range is intentionally broad: classic movie villains sit beside anime, games, streaming animation, and theme-park horror. That makes the month-long cosmetic schedule as much a part of the event as its map and combat changes.
The bottom line
Fortnitemares 2026 gives players several reasons to change their usual route. Nightmare Neighborhood offers a valuable boss reward, Overrides can reshape a squad’s tactics, and the returning seasonal weapons make close fights less predictable. With Horde Rush available and Reload’s update following on October 8, the event is spread across more than one way to play.
